Leading hoop Hugh Bowman is thrilled to have picked up the ride on Wine Tales for Saturday’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville and I hopeful a gear change with help the filly in a return to the winner’s circle.
Wine Tales has posted several commendable results over her four start career this time and was last seen boxing on for a competitive second behind Hi World in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) on April 18th.
Having partnered the Tale Of The Cat filly in a strong barrier trial prior to her competitive return this time, Bowman believes she does have some improvement to make if she is to compete with the likes of Fontein Ruby and Fenway in the 2015 Australasian Oaks.
“She’s against quality opposition but the blinkers have gone on and that might help switch her on,” Bowman told AAP.
“I think she’s probably got to find a length-and-a-half to be up to the mark here but I think she’s got it in her.”
Posting two wins and a further five minor place finishes through her ten career starts so far, Wine Tales stamped her claims as one to watch over a short debut preparation through the 2014 winter; taking out the Ibis Milano Restaurant (1100m) first-up before placing a close second to Delectation in the TAB Early Quaddie Handicap (1200m).
Posting similar results through two minor Sydney sprints upon resuming in spring, Wine Tales placed a credible fifth in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) before ending her campaign a close second to Wawail in the Listed City of Greater Dandenong Stakes (1400m).
Running second in the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m) most notably over her three starts prior to the Frank Packer Plate, Wine Tales is offered a great chance of figuring early in the 2015 Australasian Oaks from the ideal barrier 8.
