Unlucky to be scratched from the field of the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) with a minor hoof issue last week, co-trainer Shannon Hope has revealed Fenway may travel to Adelaide this season to contest the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) as a consolation.
Posting two wins and one minor place finish through her six start career so far, Fenway has returned to racing in exceptional form this season; unlucky to place fourth in each of the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) before breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) most recently on March 28th.
Pleased with the condition of the High Chaparral filly, Hope told Racing Victoria the team is confident she is all but over her bruised hoof and believe the 2015 Australasian Oaks figures as an ideal option should she work well over the coming week.
“We’ll know more in the next 48 hours but this morning was the first time we could put a saddle on her and we gave her a trot and she seemed to be fine,” Hope said.
“From Wednesday (last week) we couldn’t work her because she was too lame.
“I was really concerned with the (Randwick) track anyway with the way it raced and she’s never handled the wet. It just obviously wasn’t meant to be so we’ll just concentrate on getting her right for Adelaide.
“Fitness isn’t a problem, she’s won over a mile-and-a-quarter and she’s only missed three days work. It (the injury) is not the end of the world and we’re not playing catch up.”
Stamping her claims as one to watch when taking out a minor over 1400m on debut in October, Fenway was unlucky to be blocked for a run and checked late when fourth in the Champagne Pommery BM78 (1600m) a fortnight later but responded well in placing a credible third in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on November 1st.
Nominations for the 2015 Australasian Oaks are due by Monday, April 27th while a final field and barrier draw is set to be completed and released on the 29th.
