Trainer Robbie Griffiths remains confident in the chances of talented three-year-old Girl In Flight in this weekend’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville racecourse, despite being allocated the somewhat awkward and unlucky barrier 13.
Having shared a conversation with form analyst and close friend Deane Lester following Tuesday’s draw, Griffiths told TVN he feels far better for drawing what could well and truly figure as a winning gate in this weekend’s South Australian feature race.
“She has drawn an awkward barrier, but she is in peak form at the right time” Griffiths said.
“Deane said it is actually not a bad draw as the way the circuit is over there those barriers come into play.
“It’s good to hear that five of the past dozen or so winners have come from out wide.”
Securing a strong victory in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville last time out, Griffiths said he expects Girl In Flight to overcome whatever running situation is produced by her rivals this weekend.
“She is pretty versatile. Last time she drew barrier two and she was three back and popped off the fence and there have been other situations where she came from last at Caulfield” Griffiths added.
“She has more strong to her bow than being one dimensional.”
Debuting on track with three impressive back-to-back victories in three-year-old events over increasing distances in late 2013, Girl In Flight was unlucky to finish third when blocked for a run in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) first-up this season before sprinting well to finish fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) on March 8th.
Third in the particularly well contested Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) and beating talented filly Solicit in the process, Girl In Flight returned to the winner’s circle with her impressive victory in South Australia most recently.
Featuring as one of only three confirmed runners offered at a quote of less than $10 in betting markets for the 2014 Australsian Oaks, Girl In Flight is currently sole occupant of the top line of wagering at even $4 odds, ahead of May’s Dream ($4.20) and Scratchy Bottom ($6).
