2014 Australasian Oaks Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 22nd, 2014

An exciting field of 16 plus two emergencies has been confirmed to line up for the major Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse this weekend, including in-form stayer May’s Dream.

Securing three wins and five places from only 10 race starts to date, May’s Dream contested a particularly impressive spring campaign; finishing third in the Sportingbet Best Tote Plate (1200m) first-up and winning the Procal Diaries Handicap (1400m) before finishing an unlucky second behind Guelph in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 16th.

Blocked for a run and fourth in a minor event over 1200m first up this campaign, the New Approach filly won the Pantry Packer Handicap (1523) on March 29th before displaying a keen turn of foot to finish third in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) last time out.

Trainer Darren Weir is understandably confident in the chances of May’s Dream this weekend, and sees no issue in being allocated the wide and awkward barrier 15.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 Australasian Oaks is talented Michael Kent-trained filly Scratchy Bottom.

Securing two wins from only five race starts to date, Scratchy Bottom won the World Class locally Plate (1533m) on debut on October fourth, before being blocked for a run and finishing an unlucky fourth in the Group 2 Don’t Hold Back Classic (1600m) in only her second competitive appearance.

Returning to the track in strong form this time in, the daughter of Sebring won the Robert Hunter Fillies Maiden (1400m) first-up, before finishing a competitive fourth in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) on February 15th and fifth in the Group 1 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) last time out.

Having been allocated the central barrier 7 for the 2014 Australasian Oaks, Scratchy Bottom represents a legitimate chance of victory in South Australian this weekend.

Interesting figuring as the only entrant to carry winning form into the Group 1 Australasian Oaks, Girl In Flight will have to overcome the unlucky barrier 13 if to continue her good run of form this weekend.

Finishing outside the places just once in seven starts, which has also included four strong victories, Girl In Flight has more than earned her place in the Australasian Oaks final field in what will be her maiden tilt at a Group 1 event.

Claiming victory in all three of her maiden preparation races over the 2013 spring and returning to racing with a strong run for third in The Vanity, the Commands filly was unlucky when blocked for a run and fourth in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m) on March 8th, before overcoming poor running position to finish third in the particularly well-contested Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) prior to her most recent victory.

Likely to return to the spelling paddock following this weekend’s feature, trainer Robbie Griffiths is confident jockey Matthew Allen will again get the most from his runner this weekend.

Hitting peak condition over her last three race starts, Peter Moody-trained filly In Masquerade was arguably the biggest winner of all Australasian Oaks runners at Tuesday’s barrier draw, having been allocated the ideal gate 5.

New Zealand import Rasa Lila will leave from the inside barrier in this weekend’s Australasian Oaks, while Artistic Lass will have to overcome the wide barrier 18.
