Invest Produces Upset in Australasian Oaks

April 28th, 2012

Clarry Connors-trained filly Invest has produced an outstanding run to upset her more fancied rivals in the Group 1 2012 Australasian Oaks at Morphetville today.

The Dehere three-year-old started from the inside and jockey Peter Mertens was happy to let her sit behind the lead before showing her talent to finish strongly ahead of Our Miss Jones and Essence.

Mertens was pleased to get the easy run after being disadvantaged in previous races on her when drawing wide.

“She’s always sort of drawn bad gates and been a bit vulnerable. Today she got a nice easy run and really finished it off,” Mertens said.

The victory delighted Connors who was full of praise for Invest after scoring his first Group 1 victory as a trainer in the South Australian capital.

“She’s a good filly. This is what we aimed for a long time,” Connors said.

“She can stay. She’ll go a bit further as well I think.”

Essence produced a courageous effort to finish third after setting the tempo for almost the entire race after jumping to an early lead.

Paying $14.00, Invest beat a host of more highly rated horses including favourite Empress Rock who was unable to finish after getting into a good position early.
